Review: Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500 DJ Controller + giveaway

djs Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500 DJ Controller

The French electronics company Hercules under the operation of the Guillemot Corporation has a very special announcement: The Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500 - Hercules' most powerful DJ controller yet! Hercules has recently taken interesting steps towards more serious hardware for the producer and DJ community. This was reflected in the release of the Monitor 5, which is a very interesting and competitive studio and DJ monitor - the full review of which can be read here.

The Hercules DJControl Inpulse is the successor in a series of 2 other controllers, the DJControl Inpulse 200 and DJControl Inpulse 300.

We had the honor to test the DJControl Inpulse 500 before release, this resulted in this review and video.

Previous versions

Hercules wants to move forward, that is clear. They develop new hardware in a series that is continuously improved. For example, the DJControl Inpulse 200 and DJControl Inpulse 300, the 300 we previously wrote about in this article.

It was one of the most innovative controllers for the price under €200 with interesting features. A great DJ controller for the starting DJ, which let you master the basic techniques super well.

In addition, the controllers come with their own Hercules software named DJUCED, which Hercules is developing and offers interesting functions such as "artificial intelligence". In addition, the DJUCED software is free to use for everyone.

The Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500 must be an even more complete and professional controller.

What's new with the DJControl Inpulse 500?

Basically, the DJControl Inpulse 500 is a 2-channel DJ controller with the following functionalities.

  • 3 band EQ filter
  • 2 headphone outputs (6.3mm jack and 3.5mm jack)
  • Microphone connection (6.3mm) with dedicated effects
  • AUX in with filters
  • Foots to raise the controller
  • Sync track with Beat Align (for Serato and DJUCED) with complete beat-matching guide
  • A few smart features such as lights per deck
  • Velvet Sound DSP from AKM

In fact, a lot of new functionalities have been added by Hercules, which takes this controller to a higher level. For example, the microphone section has separate filters for low and high frequencies. This is very cool, because it allows you to be creative in the use of your own voice.

The effects section is very extensive and of course includes a basic 3-band EQ. In addition, you have 4 filter / FX buttons that you can trigger with a large filter button, so you can quickly switch between different effects. This is also the case for the AUX part where you have a filter option.

It is very nice that you get 2 connections for your headphones, one with a mini jack and a large jack connection. The headphone section is also easy to control with a CUE / Master knob and a volume knob. This also has a separate VU meter and an on / off switch. You can of course also switch the headphones on or off per deck.

The entire layout of the controller is really divided into sections, making it easy to understand. With the DJControl Inpulse 300 we had the feeling that it is really a "starter" DJ controller, this feeling is completely gone with the DJControl Inpulse 500. This looks very sleek and professional, which is also reflected in the finish.

Build quality

The build quality has improved a lot compared to the previous versions. The buttons are made of plastic, but feel sturdy and robust. The middle mixer section of the controller is finished with a metal cover, which is very cool!

All this with a complete weight of 3.3kg, Hercules has set the bar high. What is also very unique to see, are the 4 folding legs under the controller. This may seem unnecessary at first glance, but it is still very nice! In addition, there are also lights in the legs, as shown in the video.

The legs are made of a kind of soft rubber, so that the controller does not slip when used. The faders also feel with the correct resistance. Overall, Hercules has developed a solid piece of hardware, especially when looking at the previous versions.

Software DJUCED and Serato

Hercules has a partnership with Serato, making the controller compatible with Serato. You can get started with Serato Lite for free and you get 2 weeks of free Serato Pro with the purchase of the DJControl Inpulse 500.

Serato is of course very well known an excellent software for DJs, but DJUCED also offers a very nice solution. The Hercules software itself is of course fully compatible and provides DJs with all needs when starting out.

The great thing about DJUCED is that it is of course from Hercules - making all controls visible in the software. You can also make other adjustments in the software such as assigning effects and loading music directly from Beatport Link and Beatsource Link.

Our experience shows that DJUCED is certainly not inferior to other software and is a good choice to start.

In use

The DJControl Inpulse 500 is a very flexible and well build controller, everything is nicely divided into sections and different lights contributes to the transparent display of different statuses. For example, there is the number 1 and 2 on each deck, which lights up when it is playing - very handy for creating a quick overview!

It's a plug & play experience, connect a USB cable in combination with the software and you can start running immediately. Do you not have much experience with beat matching yet? Then use the tempo sync function or the beat align.

This way you ensure that you master the controller quickly, but it is of course great to learn to mix 2 songs by listening.

The DJControl Inpulse 500 is a versatile controller with many connectivity options. You can use it in many different setups, also in terms of software you can work with Serato or DJUCED. This ensures that you have enough options to play around with and can use the controller in different setups.

The DJControl Inpulse 500 feels very professional in finish, build quality and the materials used. Hercules has an interesting high quality entry level DJ controller, which does not give you the beginner feeling like with the DJControl Inpulse 200. All this with a total weight of 3.2kg, makes the controller also very portable.

Well done Hercules!
